As part of the smoking ban, bars and restaurants must post no-smoking signs where people can see them (May 2, 2010).
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – After nearly six months with the statewide smoking ban in effect, the numbers are in — and there haven’t been many complaints and citations issued at local bars and restaurants.
In Kent County, there were eight complaints in May, six in June, five in July and two for August, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health. No citations were issued throughout the county.
Local health department officials check up on bars and restaurants when they do their regularly scheduled food inspections, or when someone calls in.
But 24 Hour News 8 spoke with one bar owner who said that system isn’t always fair. And, he added, the effectiveness of the statewide smoking ban is still somewhat cloudy.
"I think it got ran through the state government pretty quick, and the intention got lost somewhere," said Larry Zeiser, the owner of Logan’s Alley, 916 Michigan St. NE.

After nearly three years in Illinois, the only complaints are from people who have been 86ed from a bar, even the ones that comply. It’s nothing but an easy way to hassle a bar that someone has a grudge against.

Stopped in a 3.2 bar last week. All four customers and bartender were smoking. ALRIGHT! I lit up too and had a GREAT time and met some really fun people. SCREW THE BAN! None of the nannies have the cahones to ticket these guys!
