The United States will “fight and claw” against England in the opening World Cup Group C game on Saturday, according to goalkeeper Tim Howard.

“We are scrappy,” Howard said. “We are going to fight. And I’m sure if we kick them they won’t walk away with their tails between their legs. They’ll kick back. So it might be a scrappy game.”

The US are likely to pose England their sternest test in trying to reach the knockout stages of the competition with Howard, who plays his club football with Everton, nevertheless believing Fabio Capello’s team are contenders to win the World Cup.

“I thought so, I still think so,” Howard said. “I certainly have them for the last four, they are a fantastic team and the ‘Golden Generation’ are now very much in their prime.
