Inception Soundtrack

The Inception soundtrack. Since he delivered The Dark Knight two years ago director Christopher Nolan has had plenty of praise slung his way, countless pairs of lips puckering up to kiss his derriere, and multitudinous absurdly lofty claims made on his behalf. So maybe it would represent a breath of fresh air if we take just a minute to reflect on a few of the sillier titbits to surface within the drooled-over Nolan oeuvre.

For example, in Insomnia, why doesn’t Al Pacino simply invest in some of those fetching eye blinds so familiar to regular air travellers, thereby enabling him to get that elusive bit of decent sleep? In Batman Begins, why is Liam Neeson playing The Sphinx from Mystery Men, spouting quasi-philosophical mumbo jumbo taken straight from a batch of Chinese fortune cookies? You know the kind of thing – to take a step forward, you must first take a step back; to dig more deeply, sometimes you must stop digging at all; straighten up and always try to hit the fairway. And how silly was The Prestige? All of it. Especially the little beard sported by Hugh Jackman near the end of the film?

Ah, just a bit of fun, Nolan. You got a sense of humour, right? Sure you do. Why else would you have cast Scarlett Johansson as a Brit? We’ll find out soon enough if Nolan’s Inception is up to scratch – and I for one am very much hoping it is, not least because if it stiffs it is going to make it even harder than it already is for directors to deliver event movies based on original screenplays rather than computer games, comic books or crappy old TV shows – but we are able to run our ear over the soundtrack a little bit ahead of time. Hans Zimmer is on composing duties for this PhilDickian mega-budget exploration of dreams, memory and reality, and he is a man in decent blockbuster form; his score for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes proving one of the very few virtues of that idiotic hotchpotch of a movie.

And there is good news for those seeking indicators that Inception is going to deliver on at least some of the hyperbole, as Zimmer’s soundtrack is a moodily effective affair. The bellowing horns of opener Half Remembered Dream are like some leviathan emerging from a dense fog, and put me in mind of another DiCaprio-starring head-messer, Shutter Island – a very good thing indeed, given that the soundtrack to that film was one of the very best of 2010 thus far. We Built Our Own World emanates the same mix of romance and foreboding as Bernard Herrmann’s incredible music for Vertigo, while the funkily insistent Mombasa comes over like an expert tribute from Zimmer to the theme tune of one of those aforementioned crappy old TV shows, Airwolf.

Okay, so Dream is Collapsing feels like a leftover from the Dark Knight score Zimmer cooked up in conjunction with James Newton Howard, but that is one of the few tracks here that is more pedestrian than pedigree, with surging closer Time providing a fitting ending for a very fine soundtrack which for the most part eschews obvious blockbuster bluster in favour of subtly pleasures. Let’s just hope the movie can match up to the music.
